The end of Social Media

This is a retreat of sorts, a regression. A compounding of experiences, good and bad. A careful weighing of the positives and negatives. In the end, the nays have won, and I have decided that the current realm of social media is primarily harmful to myself and society and is no longer a good fit for me. And like this, I pull back to an internet that works for me. This concretely means that I’m abandoning all social media, except for Twitter and LinkedIn. Whether or not I will continue to use Twitter is highly dependent on which direction the platform is taken by its new leadership. My hunch is that Twitter will be next on the chopping block.

The recent push by techno libertarians, tech giants, grifters, and right-wing extremists to the much-hyped web3 powered by cryptocurrencies and the metaverse has further cemented my desire to go back to basics.

Luckily, the old internet that worked for me still exists, now pushed back into the side streets lying in the shadows of the Internet giants.

Just like exploring quirky neighborhoods off the beaten path on a visit to a new city, it takes more effort, a keen eye, and curiosity to find what one is looking for that is of value. But from my experience, such initiative is always rewarded—experiences of new friendships, unexpected adventures, and a better understanding of the world.

I have started to dust off my trusty RSS reader by the mainstream long-forgotten artifact of information utility. I'm looking forward to what I will discover on this journey back to sanity.

If you own a website with an RSS Feed, drop me a line and I’ll consider adding it to my reader.
