Olympus XA / by Tim Trautmann

About 20 years ago, I saw this Olympus XA rangefinder camera for sale in a camera store in San Francisco’s North Beach. I immediately fell in love with it and purchased it on the spot. It’s my favorite compact film camera. I love its simple design. The f/2.8 lens is amazing. It operates in aperture priority mode which I absolutely love. It produces amazing images despite its size.

Due to life circumstances, this little gem ended up in a storage box for several years. A handful of moves later and it’s back, ready to go on some adventures with me.

A camera of this age will eventually need some maintenance. Mine, for instance, needs to have its light meter calibrated.

If you live in Portland, and you need help with your old camera, bring it over to Mike Knight of Knight Camera Repair. He knows this camera well and has plenty of spare parts, in case they are needed. You can find him Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at Blue Moon Camera & Machine in St. Johns.
